The Schaeffler Group, a global automotive and industrial supplier based in Germany, has been shaping the economic landscape in Wooster since it opened a plant there in the 1970s. Schaeffler announced it will expand its plant by 91,000 square feet and add 250 jobs.

Schaeffler’s plant in Wooster, home to its LuK brand, designs and manufactures transmission system components, primarily torque converters, for automotive original equipment manufacturers across the globe. The technologies that Schaeffler introduces to the market are focused on improving vehicle performance, fuel economy and driving comfort. Schaeffler is Wooster’s largest employer with nearly 1,770 employees.

Schaeffler needed to increase its production capabilities to keep up with
the growing demand for its products. Company officials considered several sites in North America for an expansion. Ultimately, they chose to expand the company’s operations in Wooster.

For Schaeffler, a local workforce already familiar with the automotive industry as well as the state’s proximity to automotive manufacturers and suppliers gave Northeast Ohio the edge. The state’s integrated infrastructure, growth- friendly tax structure and cultural competency also helped the state stand out.

“Our partnership with the state of Ohio, JobsOhio, Team NEO and the city of Wooster plays an important role in Schaeffler’s continued growth.”
