Amgen Bolsters Ohio’s Biotechnology Credentials
The Need
To meet growing demand and prepare the company for long-term growth, Amgen, a global leader in biotechnology, needed a new facility to build, assemble, label, and package syringes for the U.S. market.
With a focus on areas like oncology, cardiovascular disease, and inflammation, Amgen delivers groundbreaking treatments for serious diseases through cutting-edge science and human genetics. The company’s state-of-the-art packaging operations play a crucial role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and reliable delivery of its therapies to millions of patients around the world.
The Solution
Amgen planned to expand its footprint in Ohio by building a new facility next to its existing biomanufacturing site. The project marked the largest life sciences and pharmaceutical manufacturing expansion in Ohio history, with Amgen committing to invest at least $822 million, creating 350 new jobs and retaining 400 existing jobs.
The project was assisted by a $5 million JobsOhio grant. Construction is expected to be completed in 2027.
Key factors in choosing Ohio included:
- Ohio’s growing prominence as a national leader in biotech and life sciences
- The state’s strong business climate
- A deep talent pool that pulls from a steady flow of skilled STEM and life-science professionals graduating from Ohio’s many universities and technical centers
- Supply chain advantages that exist from having other similar, interconnected businesses located in close proximity to each other
- Best-in-class infrastructure including the fourth largest interstate highway system in the nation, the fourth largest network of operating railroads, and the fifth highest state in the nation in warehousing and storage services
- Ohio’s central location—an ideal site for transporting goods not only throughout much of the U.S. and Canada, but also around the globe
