SNC Celebrates New Large Aircraft MRO Facility – Aviation Innovation and Technology Center – with Opening of First Dayton, Ohio, Hangar
DAYTON, Ohio (Feb. 8, 2023) – Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC), in partnership with Ohio Lt. Governor Jon Husted, JobsOhio and the Dayton Development Coalition, today celebrated the opening of the SNC Aviation Innovation and Technology Center (AITC). It is the first large aircraft maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility constructed in the Dayton region since WWII. SNC broke ground on the facility in February 2022.
The 100,000-square-foot facility – the first of two – is located at the Dayton International Airport, and is capable of supporting some of the largest aviation projects in the world. SNC’s Aviation Innovation and Technology Center will result in the creation of approximately 150 new jobs in the Dayton region.
"SNC's new Aviation Innovation and Technology Center is further proof to the world that Dayton is the ultimate logistical hub for cutting-edge aerospace technology," said Ohio Governor Mike DeWine. "Ohio has a legacy of being a leader in aviation, and this new facility near Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and the Life Cycle Management Center will strengthen our national defense and bolster the Miami Valley’s rich history of aviation excellence."
"The opening of the SNC Aviation Innovation and Technology Center ensures we continue to lead in the large aircraft MRO field," said Mark Williams, SNC senior vice president strategy. "Our expansion in Dayton and the Miami Valley allows SNC to harness the extensive existing infrastructure and skilled talent that are necessary to deliver the cutting-edge solutions our customers demand. As SNC marks 60 years of unparalleled aviation innovation excellence, the AITC ensures we will continue to stay one step ahead of the ever-evolving threat landscape."
"Choosing Dayton to build this large-scale aviation center is proof that SNC recognizes Ohio as having the infrastructure, workforce and expertise to support the aviation sector at the highest levels," said Lt. Governor Jon Husted. "Today's event reinforces the fact that Ohio is a leader in aviation, aerospace and national defense and that more businesses are choosing Ohio as a place to grow, which provides high-paying jobs and a bright future for Ohioans."
The 16-acre Dayton International Airport site brings a modern, large-scale aviation center to the Dayton region, known as the home of the Wright Brothers and the Birthplace of Aviation. In addition to passenger operations, the Dayton International Airport boasts three large runways, more than 5 million square feet of total ramp space, and all on-site aircraft support services needed to complement the new hangars.
"With the help of the Dayton Development Coalition, SNC understood that there's no better place to revolutionize aviation and large aircraft maintenance," said J.P. Nauseef, JobsOhio president and CEO. "Ohio has a competitive advantage, with the Air Force customer at Wright Patterson, and a legacy dating back to the Wright Brothers, the future of aerospace, military, and aerospace innovation is here."
SNC’s Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR), Aviation and Security (IAS) business area is an industry leader in post-production modifications across hundreds of commercial and military aircraft. IAS is a leading integrator for special mission aircraft, including major C-130J modifications, Special Operations ISR aircraft, transport, test and other mission system upgrades.
