Workforce Wins: Forging Key Connections With LG Energy Solution-Honda

Challenge: L-H Battery Company, the joint venture between LG Energy Solution and Honda (LGES-Honda), set out to build an EV battery plant in Jeffersonville, Ohio. The partnership included a commitment of $3.5 billion for the new battery plant and an additional $700 million commitment from Honda for the retooling of three existing Honda facilities for EV production. With big plans to scale EV battery production, the company needed a workforce strategy to support the business now and for years to come.

Solution: JobsOhio, Ohio’s private economic development corporation, quickly gathered partners from around the state to engage in planning sessions designed to help L-H Battery meet its workforce goals. Key partners included the Greater Ohio Workforce Board, the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services, the Governor’s Office of Workforce Transformation, and the Ohio Association of Community Colleges. Each partner had a key role in supporting infrastructure development that would allow the company to attract, develop, and retain technical talent and address critical skill needs.

In addition to state funding, which contributed to the opening of a new OhioMeansJobs recruitment center near the LGES-Honda facility, JobsOhio’s team of talent experts worked hand-in-hand with the company to develop and distribute a communication guide to educational partners, state agencies, and community-based organizations.

The guide provided partners with clear direction on L-H Battery's hiring timelines and how to assist job seekers. It was distributed to 200+ higher education institutions and community-based organizations. Additionally, JobsOhio hosted webinars as part of the guide’s rollout process, which nearly 100 partners attended.

Lasting Impact: LGES-Honda broke ground in February 2023, and as of April 2025, the joint venture had already hired nearly 400 full-time associates for various engineering, leadership, and support roles. The infrastructure and ecosystem connections leveraged to help LGES-Honda meet its hiring needs will continue to serve Ohio’s robust automotive manufacturing industry for years to come.
