The Future of Aviation: GE Aerospace Powers Ohio’s Innovation

Published: January 10, 2025

Rise Program from GE's aviation engineers

The Challenge

Ohio is the birthplace of aviation and the home of the Wright Brothers, and the state’s heritage in flight and aerospace powers the industry’s future. Ohio is also a pioneer in aircraft propulsion and the number one supplier to industry giants Boeing and Airbus.

GE Aerospace is a global leader in the production of leading-edge jet engines for commercial and military aircraft. Headquartered in Cincinnati, the company has understood the need to adapt, innovate, and remain technologically vigilant to drive growth. It found the perfect environment for success in Ohio’s aerospace and defense ecosystem.

The Solution

With help from a $9 million research and development grant from JobsOhio, GE Aerospace is advancing next-generation propulsion technologies for commercial aircraft. The investment helped grow the company’s Cincinnati headquarters and Peebles Test Operations by expanding its workforce, funding a new and upgraded test facility, and supporting its RISE jet engine technology demonstration program.

The Results

  • Jobs Created: 200

  • Total Payroll: $16 million

  • Total Investment: $8 million

  • Economic Impact: Aviation is one of the largest and most significant industries in Ohio, generating $7.6 billion in gross regional product in Southwest Ohio alone.

  • Strategic Advantage: This announcement not only champions GE Aerospace’s ongoing research and development initiatives, but helps secure the company’s position as an industry leader and reinforces the region’s status as the global epicenter for aerospace innovation.

Other recent GE Aerospace announcements in Ohio included:

  • The Services Technology Acceleration Center (STAC) in Springdale, which opened in 2024. STAC is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to advancing aerospace inspection technologies and repair processes for global Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities.

  • An investment of more than $127 million in Ohio manufacturing facilities in 2024 to help increase engine production and strengthen quality.

  • The Electrical Power Integrated Systems Center in Dayton, where plans were announced in 2023 to invest up to $20 million to support increased testing of hybrid electric engine systems.

This grant funding will help GE Aerospace invest in the latest technology to advance its R&D operations and strengthen its commitment and presence in Ohio. Ohio has a storied history of aviation ingenuity dating back to the Wright brothers, and GE Aerospace continues to build on that foundation of excellence by developing the next-generation engine products here.
