Greater Stark County Urban League
Who Are We?
The National Urban League was founded in 1910 in New York City as a nonpartisan civil rights organization that advocates on behalf of African Americans and against racial discrimination in the United States. Today, the National Urban League has seven active affiliates in Ohio, and 83 others in 35 states and the District of Columbia.
The Greater Stark County Urban League (GSCUL) began in 1921 as the Canton Urban League and is an Affiliate of the National Urban League. Its mission is to enable African Americans and the underserved to reach full economic, social, and health parity to enrich their lives and the lives of their families.
How Can We Help You?
The GSCUL employs a five-pillar strategy to help move families to economic self-sufficiency through their dedicated efforts in workforce development, education, housing, health, and social justice. The organization also participates in the CareerConnect Collaborative, a network of social service organizations throughout Stark County who work to share best practices and community resources. A key element of their workforce development effort is to build strong relationships with both job seekers and employer partners as a means to uplift the entire community.
A team of eight GSCUL Navigators assist job seekers by effectively matching them to the many job openings in Stark County while also providing the candidates with personal and professional development opportunities such as resume building and interview preparation, financial literacy, and Spanish and English courses to address language barriers. They also provide wraparound services to address barriers to employment such as transportation, work attire, and food insecurity. One Navigator who specializes in working with returning citizens has had successful placements in various industries, including manufacturing, administrative roles, and food production.
